Now I have never really bought powders that often. I did more so when I was younger as my skin was oiler but in recent years it is definitely something that has been lacking in my makeup bag. Now in the summer months my skin is oiler so I had been looking to buy a powder that was going to help that whilst adding a little bit of coverage. I was split between two products: The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish or the MAC Studio Fix Powder. In the end back to MAC won me over, here’s what I think of it.
The first great thing about this powder is how many shades it comes in! I bought NC15 which is pretty good, especially for highlighting slightly or just blending in to my natural skin tone, however I feel like NC20 would also work as NC15 can sometimes be a touch too pale. This does suit everyone from very very fair to very dark skin tones too which I think is great as a lot of powders are either too dark for light skin and look muddy or orange or too light for dark skin and look ashy!
I love the packaging of this product, in typical MAC form it is sturdy and robust whilst still looking quite sleek. Inside there is a large mirror, a cosmetic puff/sponge and 15g of product! I also like how the puff has been kept separately in a little compartment underneath to avoid it getting too dirty or transferring excess oils to the powder.
The actual product itself is fantastic! It doesn’t cling to my dry patches whilst managing to tone down the excess oil. The powder itself is very finely milled and doesn’t look too heavy or cakey, even on top of fuller coverage foundations. It leaves a very smooth looking finish on the skin and my foundation lasts a lot better throughout the day. As this is actually a powder foundation, it does add a little bit of coverage which is great, especially when wearing lighter foundations that need a bit of oomph. I like to apply this with a Real Techniques Buffing Brush to press it over more delicate areas like under the eyes and buff it into bigger areas like the cheeks. This blends out like a dream and really has improved the look of my makeup throughout the day.
I thought I would have to give this a try as an actual foundation as I have never tried powder foundation and curiosity was getting the better of me! I used this on holiday with a touch of concealer and I was actually really impressed. Once I’d covered up my blemishes with my concealer, this evened out my complexion and provided enough coverage for the rest of my skin that didn’t require the fuller coverage. I did find that when I used it on it’s own, I needed a touch of bronzer to warm up my skin as it did make me look even paler than I am, however adding a little bit of bronzer was no hassle.
Overall I am so glad I picked this up. For £22 I think it is a great multi use product that I will wear every single day. The added benefit of it counting towards Back to MAC is just the icing on the cake. I would like to get the next shade up of this too to compare the shade with my skin tone. Have you tried this powder? Is this something you would use?
