Worth The Hype? – Spectrum Brushes!

Way way back in August I was lucky enough to win a set of the Spectrum Brushes from the #NottsAlzheimersMeetup raffle and after months of testing them out, I thought a review was on the cards! I have seen so many amazing Instagram pictures of these brushes and they look gorgeous but I wanted to chat today about how I find the actual brushes to use!

I received a set of 8 brushes and also a single brush which was great as it covered both eye brushes and face brushes so it gave me a good chance to test out the brand! The brushes are all synthetic and completely vegan friendly which is great as, personally, I don’t feel that brushes should have anything to do with animal products. Synthetic brushes have improved so much over the years that real hair brushes are just not needed anymore and I’m so pleased about that!

For me, the obvious comparison brand for Spectrum is Real Techniques, whose brushes I’ve been using for years and years! I have to say that I think Real Techniques brushes are better at blending and also in the quality department. These Spectrum brushes do feel quite cheap, not in the brush itself but in the hairs. I find that they are way too soft to get a good application and the fact that they are so fluffy means that you lose a lot of product. Real Techniques brushes are much more densely packed yet still enable you to get a good blend and a soft focus finish if you so desire!

The brush that I like the most is one that I actually got two of and that’s the A04. It’s a rounded medium sized brush that I find is great for blush or highlight, where you don’t want as much product on the face. This brush does diffuse the product nicely and is the perfect size for use on the cheeks. I’ve got to be honest and say that other than the A04, I don’t reach for the rest of the brushes that often as my Morphe Eye Brushes and Real Techniques face brushes are miles better! The eye brushes just don’t pack the pigment on like I’m used to and they don’t blend out the edges very well either unfortunately. My least favourite was probably the big powder brush as it was so floppy you couldn’t even tell if you’d applied any powder to your face at all!

Now if you like a very natural finish, then I would say that these could be okay for you as they don’t apply a lot of product. However, if you are like me and are used to being able to see what you are working with then I wouldn’t recommend these. The only one I would recommend is the A04 as that is actually quite a nice brush, however I have had some hairs shed which I wasn’t expecting! All in all, these are beautiful, Instagram-worthy brushes that look amazing on your dressing table. But in practice they don’t perform as well as i’d like them too for the price and I would definitely recommend the likes of Real Techniques and Morphe over the Spectrum brushes. They come in somewhere between Morphe and Real Techniques in the price department, but both completely out perform them!

Have you tried Spectrum Brushes? What did you think of them? Are there certain brushes that perform better than others?

Worth The Hype? – Too Faced Born This Way Foundation!

I’ve been wanting to try the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation for quite a while now as I’ve seen so many of my favourite bloggers rave about it! I also liked that the colours appeared to come up a tad yellow toned which is great as I have a seriously yellow undertone to my skin! So when I got a £15 Debenhams voucher for my birthday, I just threw caution to the wind and bought it! I wanted to test it out before I gave you a review so here we are, just over a week later and I have a lot to talk about!

Price & Packaging:

This foundation retails for £29 which I don’t think is that bad for a high end foundation. You get the standard 30ml that is now recognised as the go-to foundation size so you’re not missing out on anything there! The packaging is actually something I really really love about this product! It has a lovely frosted glass packaging that feels really high end; it comes with a pump which is always a necessity and it has a lovely black and gold top that makes the packaging tie in nicely. I think this is subtle yet packs a punch as it looks very classy!

Colour Selection:

There are 18 different shades of this product available on Debenhams website which I think is pretty damn impressive! They have some seriously light shades like ‘Snow’ & ‘Pearl’ and also some lovely deeper tones like ‘Mahogany’ & ‘Chestnut’ for beautiful darker skinned ladies. I do think they’ve covered most bases and Too Faced’s website actually helps you pick a shade relevant to the shade of your skin and also the undertones which is super handy! I like to think i’m pretty good at guessing my correct shade by now so I took the plunge and took the one I thought was the right shade home with me that day without even trying it on. Risky I know, but a random shop assistant was talking to me like I had no idea about makeup and that made me more determined to pick the shade I thought I would be not her suggestion. I’m happy to say (and rather smug) that my shade ‘Ivory’ is absolutely perfect and perhaps one of the best matches I own. *Dances with middle fingers in the air*.

Coverage & Formula:

I would definitely say that this has some good coverage and would say it is a medium-full coverage. It’s nowhere near as heavy as the Estee Lauder double wear range but does cover pretty much everything in just one pump. Yes you heard me right, ONE pump! I find that this has some serious lasting power too and throughout the day the coverage was pretty even and didn’t fade or grow patchy which is the perfect outcome! I loved the feel of the formula on my skin, despite the impressive coverage, the formula felt really light on the skin and never felt cakey or heavy. It blends in beautifully with either a beauty blender or a brush and doesn’t look streaky at all.

Overall I am so happy with this foundation! The shade match, the formula, the lasting power all just scream perfection to me and I can see myself using this for the foreseeable future as it makes my skin look flawless yet still looks natural! Have you tried this foundation? If so what did you think of it?

What I Got For My 22nd Birthday!

Last years ‘what I got for my birthday’ post was one of my most popular yet, so I decided to recreate it again this year as it was my birthday on the 9th October! I was clearly a very luck girl so there’s no bragging intended just some happiness sharing! I hope you enjoy and let me know what your favourite item was!

  • MAC Liptensity Toast & Butter Lipstick – Hands down my new favourite formula of MAC lipsticks and an absolutely to die for colour! I definitely want to pick up Smoked Almond as that is just a lovely everyday shade. My mum did buy it so I can at least borrow it in the mean time!
  • MAC Twig Lipstick – My brother picked this shade all by himself and boy did he do well. It’s a satin finish and i’d describe it as a cross between MAC Mehr and MAC Whirl! It’s going to be a great option for uni over the next few months and it’s even more special that he picked it!
  • MAC Brave Lipstick – This is to replace my nearly empty tube of Brave! It’s my most worn as it’s just so easy to slap on and I love it!
  • MAC Soar Lip Pencil – Finally a liner to match Brave and I think it’s dark enough to match Mehr too and probably Twig! Such a good every day liner colour that I am bound to get lots of wear out of!
  • The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer – I have only ever tried this once before I got it for my birthday and I have to say I’m really impressed. It’s more golden than some of my other highlighters but I really like the effect it gives!
  • Stila Kitten Single Eye Shadow – I don’t think I have any shades that match this! It’s so shimmery and almost a bit frosty that it really is unique! I’m going to have lots of fun creating different looks with this!
  • Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette – Be still my beating heart! This is fast becoming one of my favourite palettes! The colours are perfect, the pigmentation to die for and it smells like chocolate! What more could you ask for?! A full review will be on it’s way soon don’t you worry!
  • Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick Mini in Outlaw – I begged Tom to buy the Love Me Beauty bag for my birthday so I could fill it with the gorgeous Kat Von D goodies! This is such a lovely textured liquid lipstick and the red shade is so true and vibrant! You honestly cannot feel this on your lips and it lasts a decent few hours too!
  • Kat Von D Lipstick Mini in Magick – A great neutral shade that is in mini form which obviously makes everything better! It’s quite similar to Brave so I should get plenty of wear out of it an I love that the packaging is studded!
  • Kat Von D Mini Eye Liner – The infamous Kat Von D liner! It has one of the most precise tips I’ve seen on a liner and is very pigmented! It’s going to take a bit of getting used to as it’s so easy to make a mistake but it lasts all day long!
  • Ted Baker White Body Shimmer Soufflé – A bit of shimmer for the evenings coupled with moisturisation and some of the best packaging I have seen in Boots in ages! It really does feel pretty luxurious!
  • J’adore Dior Perfume – My grandad loves buying me perfume and he knows this is my favourite so at least I can keep wearing it over the christmas period as my previous bottle is about to run out! This is my all time favourite I think! dscf9661_fotor

  • Topshop Embroidered Denim Skirt – I always love a denim skirt and sadly theres clearly a little bit more meat on the bone on my thighs this year so my previous skirt was a little snug. Thankfully mum saved the day by picking my this one up. It’s a bit different and I love it! ts05r38kmdt_3col_f_1
  • Topshop Jamie Jeans – I don’t wear jeans every day but I love a good couple of pairs to wear particularly throughout winter. These are just a pair of dark denim high waisted jeans and they are exactly what I wanted.02l06fble_large
  • Topshop Cream Blouse – Mum has always picked nice outfits so she bought me this cream blouse with floaty sleeves to go with my jeans and my skirt. It’s so comfy to wear and the sleeves are different to anything else I have! ts13l31kivr_zoom_f_1
  • Urban Outfitters Black Cord Dungaree Dress – I definitely wear dresses more than anything else so this dungaree dress is perfect. I have a light denim and a white one for summer but I needed some to wear with tights and boots. This is black cord which I love and also a bit baggy so it’s comfy to wear throughout the day! I couldn’t find a picture of this online sadly!

  • Amazon Kindle Voucher – This was swiftly spent on books so I have been hibernating in my room reading for the last week and it has been brilliant!
  • Coconut Lane Black Marble MacBook Case – This is exactly what I was looking for and has been complimented on by everyone who has seen it since. It’s a nice matte black marble case that fits my Mac and looks really sleek and stylish!
  • Rose Gold Stud Earrings – I don’t really wear gold and I have plenty of silver studs so Rose Gold was the only pair I was lacking. These are perfect, not too big but not too small and perfect to be worn on their own in my first set of piercings or with my dangly rose gold earrings as a second set!
  • Light Box – This was definitely an amazing surprise from my mum and I LOVE it! It’s a small light box that can be used as prop for blog posts. I honestly can tell you how much fun i’ve had with this already and you better be prepared to see quite a lot of this hanging around in the background of posts!
  • Personalised Phone Case – Possibly one of my favourite gifts was a phone case with a picture of JJ on. He is just such a handsome dog and I am completely besotted with him so a phone case means he is always with me!
  • Katie Loxton Clutch Bag – I spotted this when I was out with my Nan in her town and I knew I would get lots of use out of it as a nude clutch bag is something I have been lacking. It’s the same kind of textured leather effect as the Michael Kors bags and has ‘Girlie Goodies’ embossed into it in gold! It will go perfectly with my nude heels too!
  • Feather Bracelet – My Nan picked me up a little feather bracelet that is said to make you feel more like a free spirit! We love little sentiments like this so I was really touched and I’ve worn it loads this last weekDSCF9667_Fotor.jpg

There were obviously other things like a mug, chocolates, money and prosecco etc but this post would have been way too long! Thank you to all my family and friends who treated me! I had a great day and I’m now hoping being 22 will be as good as being 21 was! Happy Birthday to anyone else who has had a birthday recently!

My First Ever Colourpop Order!

The other week Colourpop advertised free international shipping and being the beauty lover that I am, I couldn’t turn such a good offer down! It was the first time I had ever ordered anything from America (beauty wise) so I wasn’t sure a) how it was going to work and b) what it would end up costing me! I decided to just throw caution to the wind and buy what I wanted and suffer the consequences later!

Colourpop are most famous for their eyeshadows and lip products and despite having too much of each of those categories, I decided lip products was the way to go! I wanted a wide range of colours, formulas and textures to really try out the brand so I could give you guys a good opinion! First up, I bought some of the Lippie Stix as I have heard so much about them over the years and I’ve always wanted to try them. They had a great set available called the ‘Staycation’ set and it ticked off a large variety of colours for me in one block so in the bag that went! It features six matte Lippie Stix with lots of beautiful colours all for $25:

Cookie: True nude beige in a matte finish
Brink: A warm dusty taupe in a matte finish
Grunge: A cool-toned plum brown in a matte finish
LBB: Rich plum wine in a matte finish
I Heart This: Red based fuchsia in a matte finish
Bossy: Classic blue red in a matte finish

Cookie & Brink are great every day colours with one being a more pink-toned nude and the other being more beige/brown.

Brink Lippie Stix

Grunge is possible my favourite of the bunch as it is very similar to MAC’s Whirl but with a bit more warm. LBB is a beautiful colour but randomly I found it made my lips sting quite a bit whilst I wore it and it had a bit of a funny smell. Maybe I just got a dud product but it’s not the end of the world. I will try it out again and see what happens! I Heart This is a lovely bright pink  and, as with all of the Lippie Stix, the shape of the product makes it so seamless to apply! No set would be complete without a true red and Bossy got this shade bang on! It is just so beautiful and the consistency so creamy! This set is great as you basically get one colour for free as individually they retail for $5!

I did order one other Lippie Stix and a matching liner as the colour just looked gorgeous online. They’re in the shade Bichette which is a ‘Deep red wine in a matte finish’ and it’s perfect for the Autumn. The liner is just as creamy and does make this darker shade that bit easier to apply, but in the grand scheme of things, is probably not that necessary. It looks completely different on to the other dark shades I own and is definitely the most ‘Ox blood’ shade that I have found!

Next up is the Ultra Satin Lip and oh how I wish I had bought more than just one of these! I think I just clicked shades that I liked and didn’t really think about how many of each formula I was getting and this formula is just the best thing ever! It is so soft on the lips without drying them out and also doesn’t crease which is great! It applies better than any other liquid lipstick I have tried and I am DYING to get my hands on more of these shades! I picked up the colour Mess Around which is described as a ‘mid-tone grey beige’ and that is definitely pretty apt! It reminds me of MAC Stone and as you all know, that is a shade I completely adore! I am going to get so much wear out of this and believe me, I will be buying more of these in the future! These satin lip’s retail for a mere $6!

Mess Around Ultra Satin Lip

Although I’m not a glossy lip kinda gal, I did give a couple of the Ultra Glossy Lips a go as they had some gorgeous metallic shades and I am eager to jump on that metallic bandwagon! I picked up My Jam which is a ‘warm golden nude shimmering with silver and gold in a Metallic finish’ and Cheat Code which is a ‘rich copper in a Metallic finish’. These are completely packed with metallic sparkle and goodness and are seriously pigmented for a glossy finish product! Cheat code is like the lip equivalent of Amber Lights and is definitely quite a bold statement!

Cheat Code Ultra Glossy Lip

My Jam is a touch more subdued but even when the gloss has gone, the glitter is on there for hours! These also retail for $6.

Last but by no means least is the two Ultra Metallic Lips that I bought and these are like a hybrid between the shimmer of the Glossy Lips and the pigmentation and formula of the Satins! I got the shades Man Eater, which is a metallic rose gold, and Zebra which is metallic bronze.

Man Eater Ultra Metallic Lip

These last for ages and I feel like an actual princess when I wear them! I am so on board with this metallic trend and I can’t wait to continue to rock these through Autumn and Winter! These are also only $6!

Top-Bottom: LBB, I Heart This, Cookie, Bossy, Grunge, Bichette, Bichette Liner, Brink, Cheat Code, Zebra, Man Eater, Mess Around, My Jam

Thats all the naughty lip goodies that I purchased from Colour pop, for those of you who are interested in more of the logistics, I paid $66 for all 13 of these products and they took about 10 days to arrive. I sadly had to pay £18.03 in shipping and duties on arrival here in the UK which is definitely a bit of a bummer! Other than that, I am definitely going to be buying more products from them in the future. The quality and pigmentation are insane and for the price you really can’t go wrong! Even with the tax and duties included, I still only payed £5.20 on average per product which is a complete bargain! Have you tried anything from Colourpop before? What are your favourite products?

p.s i’ve only included a few lip swatches otherwise it would be a bit picture heavy but if you want to see any in particular then let me know and I’ll sort it out!

Kylie Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks Haul & First Impressions!

If you haven’t heard about the Kylie Cosmetics goodies over the last few years then you must have been living under a rock! The infamous lip kits have been blogger favourites since they first came out and I thought it was about time for me to pick some products up and give them a try!

A couple of weeks ago international shipping went down to only $5 for two days and I jumped at the chance to save a bit of cash whilst still trying some of the products. I went halves on shipping and duties with Lauren and just got stuck in and ordered them. I decided I didn’t want to go all out and get the full kits as I felt the lip liners were a bit of a waste of money. The tax and duties came to $18.49 for 4 single liquid lipsticks so yes it was a little pricey!  I went for two of the singles in the shades True Brown K and Mary Jo K. I wanted to find shades that I knew I would wear and that were also easily recognisable as Kylie shades.

True Brown K is a deep rich brown that is so perfect for Autumn. I haven’t really come across any similar shades and believe me I have been trying as this colour has been on my wishlist ever since I first set eyes on it online. Mary Jo K is a true red and a staple in everyones collection. I definitely have more than enough reds but Tom suggested a true matte red would be a worthwhile addition. Who am I to argue?! The colours are intensely pigmented and very true to the colour they appear in the tubes.

L-R True Brown K & Mary Jo K

The packaging itself is actually much nicer than I expected. It feels very sturdy and actually quite luxurious! I love the drips on the tube and the applicator itself is very easy to use and ensures you get a good, smooth line every time. I do think that a lot of thought has been put into the packaging and it definitely exceeded my expectations.

The formula itself is very unlike anything I have ever tried before. It is actually quite watery in texture yet dries down to one of the most matte finishes I have ever seen. Unfortunately this is a little uncomfortable to wear, but I feel I maybe applied it too thick at first so I am going to persevere and try to apply it a bit thinner next time. One thing I have to say is that these smell incredible, exactly like sweets or vanilla or something deliciously yummy! The smell doesn’t transfer on to the lips but it’s definitely noticeable in the tube. Although these are incredibly long wearing, I did notice a bit of patchiness in the centre of my lips a couple of hours in. It was very easy to reapply though and the layers blended in seamlessly. They are a real pain to get off at the end of the day though and really did need a bit of elbow grease to shift them!

All in all, I am a little on the fence about these after my initial impressions. I love the colours and the packaging but I am still not sure whether the formula is for me yet or not. I think it’s going to take a few goes and some application practice to determine whether these are an all time favourite or not. Have you tried these liquid lipsticks? If so what did you think of them? Which colours are your favourite? The only other one I have on my wishlist is the ginger lip kit which just looks gorgeous!

Review: Makeup Obsession Customisable Palettes!

So I spotted a couple of amazing looking palettes on Instagram recently and decided to track down where they were from! To my surprise, they were from a new budget makeup brand in Boots called Makeup Obsession and I decided for the money it was time to see if they were up to much! Here’s how I got on!

Makeup Obsession are incredibly reasonable and offer you the chance to customise your own eyeshadow/blush/bronzer/highlight palettes. Each of the individual eyeshadows only costs £2 and the palettes themselves range from £4-£8 dependent on which finish you opt for and also the amount of pans it holds! I picked the matte black palette which holds six shades, this only cost £6. I wanted to create a warm toned, predominantly matte, palette to see me into autumn so I managed to find six shades that fit the bill perfectly! I chose:

  • Cinnamon – Light peachy matte brown. A great transition shade!
  • Alba – A matte mid tone brown
  • Copper – Very similar to Alba but has a lot stronger red undertones
  • Rare – A lovely deep red shimmer
  • Cosmo – A copper shimmer shade
  • Burnt – A brick red matte shade. Definitely my favourite!
Top row L-R: Cinnamon, Alba, Copper! Bottom row L-R: Rare, Cosmo, Burnt!

When I was shopping it was £5 off a £15 spend so this palette only cost me £13 in total which I think is a complete bargain! Each shadow weighs 2g which is 0.5g more than MAC shadows for reference! I also like the fact that the pan sizes are huge which means that you could easily use these as face powders too if you find a multipurpose shade!

The pigmentation and blendability of these shadows is actually pretty incredible for the price! I had no problem smoking the shades out and blending them seamlessly! They feel very soft to the touch but thankfully they don’t have much fall out! I’ll insert swatches below to show you just how pigmented they are:

Top – Bottom: Burnt, Cosmo, Rare, Copper Alba Cinnamon

Overall I am really really please I picked these up. I think they are fantastic value for money and the pigmentation is up there with the likes of much more expensive brands! I love how fun it is to customise a palette and I’ve seen some other more out there shades that I’m definitely intrigued by! I feel like for a budget brand it has a very luxe feel and would highly recommend checking them out next time you’re in Boots! I’ll insert a picture below of a look I created using these shades:

P.s I’m hoping posting will still be regular, however I’m finding that going back to uni has made me way busier than I ever remembered!!
